When You've Been Running on Empty for Too Long

Maybe you're the person everyone depends on. You're the one who remembers the details, solves the problems, checks in on everyone else, and somehow keeps everything moving.

From the outside, you look capable.

Inside, you're exhausted.

The things that used to bring you joy now feel like another item on your to-do list. You may feel emotionally drained, detached, irritable, or like you're simply going through the motions. Even time off doesn't seem to restore your energy the way it used to.

If you work in a helping profession, you may also find yourself carrying the emotional weight of other people's pain. You care deeply, but lately it feels harder to stay present, compassionate, or connected.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not failing. You may be experiencing burnout or compassion fatigue. These experiences are more common than many people realize, and with the right support, recovery is possible.

What Burnout & Compassion Fatigue Can Look Like

Burnout affects far more than your energy level. It often impacts the way you think, feel, relate to others, and experience your work and personal life.

You may notice:
• Feeling emotionally exhausted
• Dreading work or everyday responsibilities
• Difficulty concentrating
• Increased irritability or impatience
• Feeling detached or numb
• Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
• Feeling like you're never doing enough
• Trouble sleeping or waking up tired
• Physical tension, headaches, or digestive concerns
• Feeling guilty when you rest
• Wondering if you have anything left to give

For helping professionals, caregivers, and parents, compassion fatigue can also lead to feeling emotionally depleted after spending so much time caring for others.

How Burnout Can Affect Your Life

Burnout doesn't stay at work, it often follows you home. You may notice yourself becoming less patient with the people you love. Small tasks feel overwhelming. Rest feels unproductive. Vacations don't seem long enough, and weekends disappear before you've recovered.

Many people begin questioning themselves.
"What's wrong with me?"
"Why can't I handle this anymore?"
The truth is, burnout isn't a sign that you're weak.
More often, it's a sign that you've been carrying too much for too long.

How Therapy Can Help

Healing from burnout isn't simply about taking a vacation. In fact, that likely wont help at all, unfortunately.

It's about understanding the patterns that led you here and developing a more sustainable way of living.

Together, we'll work toward helping you:
• Reconnect with your own needs.
• Develop healthier boundaries.
• Reduce chronic stress.
• Better understand your nervous system.
• Let go of unrealistic expectations.
• Reconnect with activities that bring meaning and joy.
• Create a life that feels sustainable rather than constantly overwhelming.

Therapy isn't about helping you become more productive, it's about helping you build a life that doesn't require you to constantly recover from it.

My Approach

Burnout often develops at the intersection of chronic stress, perfectionism, and caring deeply for others.

Because of that, I tailor therapy to address both the emotional and physical effects of prolonged stress.

Depending on your goals, I may integrate Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Somatic & Nervous System Therapy, EMDR Therapy, mindfulness, and self-compassion practices.

ACT helps us reconnect with your values and create healthier patterns moving forward.
Somatic approaches help calm a nervous system that has been operating in survival mode for too long.

When past experiences continue to fuel perfectionism, people-pleasing, or difficulty setting boundaries, EMDR may also become an important part of treatment.
Together, we'll create a treatment plan that supports not only feeling better, but living differently.

What's the difference between burnout and depression?

What's the difference between burnout and depression?

-
Burnout and depression can look similar, and sometimes they occur together. Burnout is often related to chronic stress, caregiving, or work demands, while depression affects many areas of life and may not have a clear external cause. During our work together, we'll explore what's contributing to your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Can burnout cause physical symptoms?

Can burnout cause physical symptoms?

-
Yes. Burnout commonly contributes to muscle tension, headaches, digestive concerns, fatigue, sleep difficulties, and other stress-related symptoms. Chronic stress affects both the mind and the body.

I work in a helping profession. Does that matter?

I work in a helping profession. Does that matter?

-
Absolutely. Therapists, healthcare providers, teachers, first responders, and other caregivers often spend so much energy supporting others that they unintentionally neglect themselves. Compassion fatigue is a very real experience, and you're not alone.

Will therapy just teach me better self-care?

Will therapy just teach me better self-care?

-
Self-care can be helpful, but burnout usually requires much more than bubble baths and weekends off. Together, we'll look at the deeper patterns, beliefs, boundaries, and stressors that have contributed to your burnout so you can create lasting change.

Can I recover from burnout?

Can I recover from burnout?

-
Yes. Recovery doesn't happen overnight, but with the right support, many people regain their energy, reconnect with what matters most, and develop healthier ways of caring for themselves while continuing to care for others.
